Last week HL7 held a virtual FHIR Connectathon. The event attracted more than 650 people from around the world. Our Chief Interoperability Officer, Mark Scrimshire, gave a presentation at the event: “HL7 FHIR and the ONC and CMS Rules.”
The ONC and CMS Rules were released on March 9, 2020. The CMS Rule is “The Interoperability and Patient Access Rule.” It places a number of requirements on to the Health Plans that CMS regulates. The implementation deadline is aggressive. The first deadline is July 1, 2021.
Many payers are scrambling to understand all of these new requirements. Our CIO used the presentation to explain how a series of HL7 FHIR Implementation Guides address the CMS requirements.
At Onyx we are actively contributing to the HL7 Da Vinci, CARIN and Gravity Accelerator projects that are developing these guides. Our SAFHIR platform, a secure architecture for FHIR, supports multiple Implementation Guides. As a result it is designed to enable payers to not just meet the current regulation buy to be able to quickly adapt to future interoperability requirements.
